Why is my Civic fuel tank not filling up all the way?

Hi, I noticed something odd with my 2025 Civic Sport Hybrid. The fuel tank is supposed to hold 46.9 liters according to Honda, but I can only fill it up to 35 liters when it says I have a 30 km range left. Any idea why this happens? I just completed 1200 km. Can anyone explain? Thanks.

Edit: Never mind everyone, I realized my mistake. The fuel tank capacity is actually 40.39 liters. The 46.9 figure is for the Sport and LX models, not the hybrid. Thanks for the replies.

If the car was made in the US, it might just be that the car is calibrated for gallons, so using liters might confuse it.

I’m pretty sure I’d get it if it were gallons and not kilometers.

@Adair
That was just a bad joke on my part.

Was the gas light on when you filled up?

Yes, the gas light was definitely on.

11.9 liters? That’s around 75% usage. Did you run it low or was it just when the fuel light came on?

Maybe there’s a buffer. My Honda’s fuel light comes on when I still have around 13 gallons left in a 17-gallon tank, so it sounds similar. Modern fuel-injected cars often have a pump in the tank that doesn’t like running dry, so the remaining fuel acts like a coolant.

The fuel light was on when I refilled. Can you explain what you mean by buffer? I didn’t quite understand.

The car is built to prevent you from running the fuel pump dry to avoid damage. When the gas light is on, there are still a few liters left in the tank, so you won’t ever fill the tank to its full capacity.

I was talking about the 30 km range left. That’s like a safety net so you can still make it to a gas station.
