Why does my 1992 Honda Civic LX Sedan not have cup holders?

I find it strange that there are no cup holders in my 1992 Honda Civic LX Sedan. The one I have doesn’t have them, so I wonder if there are any DIY solutions to add my own cup holders?

There are cup holders behind the shifter. You just have to open it.

In front of the shifter, there are cup holders, but they are fragile and not very useful for today’s bottle sizes. However, you could replace the entire part with a 3D-printed cup holder. You can find them on eBay or Etsy.

Cup holders weren’t really common back then, especially in EU or Asian cars.

It’s crazy to me that Honda is a Japanese company and didn’t include this. I never thought of it like that.

@Cade
What else would they be though?

My 1992 Civic VX has small cup holders. You push a panel in front of the stick, and two little cup holders pop out. They’re only good for a can of soda.

Perfect for your travel beer!

Back then, cup holders were bought separately and slid into the window channel of the door. They were pretty useless, but we made them work.

As useful as tits on a nun had me laughing.

@Shannon
It’s one of my favourite ways to describe something nice but ultimately useless.

I remember seeing a JDM brand that made an AC vent that could be swapped out. It would function as both a vent and a cup holder. Maybe look into those?

The 92 Civic was my first Honda. I think there’s a hump in the middle where you could add a cup holder.

As most people mentioned, the cup holders are in front of the shifter. They are one of those pop-up types, but they break easily since they’re just a couple of plastic pieces and springs. The newer ones are sturdier, but they don’t have much depth, so your cup might fly out if you’re turning.

@Ellis
Here’s a picture of what they look like.

I would love to be able to buy a new manual transmission Civic now. A base model, not an Si.

Isn’t there a pop-up cup holder in front of the shifter on US models? It springs open and fits two cans.

They used to have really bad cup holders that hung off the top of the door just below where the window rolls in.

The Gen 1 Civic didn’t even come with speakers, a radio, or AC, and it only had a driver-side rearview mirror.

We weren’t as overweight back then.
