What does the "RS" badge on some Honda cars signify?

Hey guys, what’s the deal with the “RS” badge on certain Honda cars? Is it some JDM thing?

RS refers to a specific version of the Fit sold overseas. While I’m not entirely clear on all the differences, the front end is shorter compared to the US version, and some models may come with a 6-speed transmission. It’s especially popular in Malaysia, where enthusiasts often heavily modify them.

The RS spec is primarily JDM/Asian spec, as the Western market generally associates RS with Rally Sport or similar performance enhancements. In Japan, however, it’s often just a body kit on a standard car. Even models like the Odyssey and Stepwagon occasionally have RS versions. The Fit and Civics are the most common recipients of this badge.

The “RS” badge on Honda cars doesn’t signify a performance trim. It indicates the car has enhancements for a more enjoyable driving experience, like unique wheels, side skirts, and interior details such as colored stitching. It typically doesn’t add more power, focusing instead on aesthetic and comfort upgrades.

RS badges on a Honda signify “Road Sailing,” akin to the expression “smooth sailing.” Despite the unusual wording, that’s the intended meaning. Essentially, it’s merely a trim level without any additional power or enhancements.

Just a badge, haha, doesn’t really mean much. People shouldn’t be judged by badges. Not a fan of car spotters, bro. The 1999 Subaru Impreza ‘RS’ we got here in the U.S. instead of the WRX we always wanted. But like I said, it’s just a badge; still a decent car for what it is though. Sometimes badges can overshadow things, like the Scat Pack, lol.
