Thoughts on the 2017 Honda Fit EX

I’m planning to buy a 2017 Honda Fit EX with 51k miles. It has only needed routine maintenance and a new battery this year. But this forum has made me anxious about the decision.

What do you all think?

I own a 2019 EX with 66,000 miles, and it runs perfectly fine with only routine maintenance.

That’s reassuring to hear. My main concern is the fuel injector issues since the 2017 models don’t have the extended warranty Honda provided. I hope I get lucky with it.

@Vanya
The 2015 models had injector issues, and many 2016 models did as well. But by 2017, they switched to better injectors.

I’ve seen some people mention that their 2017 and 2018 models have had fuel injector problems too, which makes me anxious.

@Vanya
I have a 2017 model with just over 100k miles. I’ve only changed the tires and brakes twice, and I just replaced the factory spark plugs. I keep up with oil changes using Mobile 1 and add Chevron fuel system cleaner regularly. It runs like it did when I first got it. I’m comfortable taking it on long trips and hope it reaches 300k miles.

I have a 2016 LX with 90k miles, and it runs really well. Mine has a manual transmission, so I can’t comment on the CVT.

All the GK Fits are pretty much the same in terms of the engine, transmission, and suspension.

As mentioned, it helps to use premium fuel and fuel injector cleaner now and then.

@Neely
Got it, thanks a lot!

I haven’t read much about the 2017s, mostly about the 2015s. My '17 EX-L is nearing 140k miles. I’ve only had to deal with a stuck caliper, which I replaced with a part from AutoZone for around $80. I really love this car.

@Flynn
That’s awesome to hear. Do you perform any maintenance on the fuel injectors? How often do you change the transmission fluid?

I don’t usually let the tank run low and sometimes use fuel system cleaner or premium fuel. I did a CVT drain and fill at 100k and 130k miles. I think they recommend changing it every 30k.

@Flynn
You’re great, thank you!

EX means extra.

Yes.

From what I’ve read online, the 2017 is better than the 2015 and 2016 models. I have a 2015, and I’ve had to do a bit of work on it, but it’s nothing I couldn’t handle with some YouTube tutorials.

Is the 2017 EX you’re considering in good shape? Are the body panels all straight and not repainted? Is your area prone to flooding? How many previous owners has it had?

@Nelson
It’s in good shape with two owners and a clean title. I didn’t check the body panels when I test drove it. I don’t live in a flood-prone area, but we do get snow. I also had a pre-purchase inspection done, and they said it looked good. I might be stressing too much from all the forums I’ve been reading.

I have a 2017 EX, 6 speed, with about 93k miles. I’ve only had it for two months after picking it up at an auction, and all I’ve had to do is change the oil and replace the interior air filter since the previous owner didn’t do it.

I have a 2017 with 117,000 miles. I do coolant, transmission, and brake fluid changes every 30k miles. Recently, I changed the spark plugs and did a valve adjustment. I haven’t really had any issues.

I did replace all four fuel injectors once, but that’s really it.

I’ve had it since it had 19k miles.

I bought a 2017 LX brand new. The dealership took care of all routine and interval maintenance. At 87k miles, I started hearing a rattling noise at startup, but it stopped after about 45 seconds. I took it to the dealer, and they said it was a factory defective part, the VTC actuator. It wasn’t a major issue then, but they warned it could get worse. I checked for safety bulletins and found out there was a recall for the 2015-16 models for the same issue, but not for the 2017, even though it has the same part. I had to replace it for over $1500. Other than that, it’s been a great car, and I have no complaints at 91,000 miles. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/SB-10098906-5233.pdf
