I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX with a 5-speed manual transmission. Lately, I’ve been experiencing a problem where the steering wheel (and sometimes the cab) shakes when I hit around 61 mph. This shaking persists and can be quite unsettling.
Here’s what I’ve done recently:
Replaced tie rod ends
Replaced control arms
Replaced brakes
Replaced the front motor mount
I also switched to a different set of wheels thinking it might help, but the issue remains. When the car is jacked up, there’s very minor side-to-side play. The shaking seems to improve when I accelerate but returns when I let off the gas.
Any ideas on what could be causing this issue? I’m trying to avoid unnecessary repairs, so any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated…Thanks
The tire could be beginning to come apart. I had a pair of winter tires that were in good condition on the outside, but the rubber had separated and they could not be balanced. You wouldn’t want to drive on it for too long, albeit you may sense it when traveling at higher speeds.
How could it be? bent wheel uneven tires Tires must be forced into equilibrium. rings centered on a hub worn down lower arm of control Wheel bearing failure
First, I would have the wheels force balanced and looked over for any rim bends of any kind.
Next, examine the control arms.
Finally, there are a few methods to determine whether the wheel bearings are defective. Look up DIY videos on YouTube.
Hub centric rings may be the problem, particularly if your wheels are aftermarket.
