Found a 98 Civic for $1500 with over 340k miles… worth it or bad idea?

This is just how things are around here. I got a 2000 Civic at an auction for $1200, including taxes and fees. If it’s been in Ohio its whole life, the underbody might be a mess. Crazy how cars like this used to go for $500, now they’re triple the price. I feel bad for anyone trying to buy their first car now.

@Jude
Prices being that high is weird. In Alaska, cars have always been more expensive because shipping costs add up. New cars already have markups, so used ones aren’t cheap either.

@Jude
Yeah, it’s rough here. High-mileage cars usually sell for about $2500 in Ohio.

@Jude
Appreciate that man lol. Just turned 18 and trying to get a car is brutal. I used to sit in the back of my mom’s car as a kid thinking I’d get an old Civic hatch for $500… yeah, that’s not happening now.

@Jude
This would be at least a $3k car in California. I miss the days when you could grab a beater for under $1k just because it had faded paint or needed a small fix.

@Jude
Just for fun, I checked Facebook Marketplace and set the max price to $500. After scrolling for 10 minutes, I found two cars that actually ran… one of them was stuck in 2nd gear.

A running car with AC for $1500? How long does it need to last for you to feel like you got your money’s worth? 4-5 months? If it runs for 6 months, that’s a solid deal.

Gotta last at least a year to be worth it.

@Jaden
You said it’s an EX trim, but the car says LX. That’s more like a $900 car at best.

Bought a $1500 CAD Acura EL, drove it for a year with zero problems. Never had to fix a thing. I always tell people it could have exploded after a year, and I still would’ve felt like I got my money’s worth. Funny enough, just past the one-year mark, the radiator blew. Slapped in a new one, and it’s still going strong.

@Windsor
Had a $1900 ‘93 Pathfinder… ran for 4 years before it got stolen and trashed.

Had a $900 ‘96 Pathfinder… ran for 3 years, just did brakes, tires, and fluids. Sold it for $1000.

Bought an $1800 Prelude… drove it for 5 years until I overheated it and warped the head.

Out of the 19 cars I’ve owned in 25 years, only the last 3 have been over $10k. I still have a $4k beater truck. Can’t stop loving cheap cars.

Rust would be my biggest concern. If you don’t know much about fixing cars, this is a great one to learn on.

Way too many miles for me. If you can talk them down on price, maybe… but I’d pass.

What’s your plan for it? Do you need a daily driver for a long commute, or are you looking for a project car? If you don’t mind working on it, it could last a while, but you have to be realistic. Eventually, something major will go out, and you’ll have to be ready to replace the engine or transmission.
