Check the front of the engine to the left of the exhaust manifold. Clean that area, and you should be able to spot it.

Exactly! Most of them have the stamp or etching on the top left part of the block, especially on the d-series.
It’s a D16Y8 for sure. The VTEC solenoid is near the 4th injector, right under that breather hose on the valve cover. Also, D16Y8 uses a P2J head.
Edit: I figured it out. It’s a D16Y8. Thanks, everyone!
Edit again: I also realized it’s definitely a VTEC motor.

I thought I could see the Y8 in the photo!

Lucky find!
See that barcode? Look right next to it, there’s a flat spot where some dirt has been wiped off. I can spot a Y and maybe an 8 there. Clean it up more, older VTEC engines didn’t always have ‘VTEC’ on the valve cover.
D16Y8. It’s a single cam motor. Whether it has VTEC or not, it’s not fast unless you add some boost. Reliable engine, but if you want power, maybe swap for a B18 or B20. Whatever you choose, have fun with it!

Lol, B-series isn’t cheap anymore.

I know right? B18C5 is around $8-10k these days.

You could K-swap for less these days. I’m already $8-9k into my K20A2 swap. It’s an ‘85k mile ’92 Civic DX hatch with electric power steering, AC, etc.
@Morgan
Nice! K-swapping is definitely the way to go compared to the B-swap. My sibling has a K24A1 in their Accord with 200k miles. I’m waiting for them to get a new car so I can grab it for a cheap engine swap for my EJ8.
@Morgan
Lucky! My Honda came stock with a K-series.

And don’t forget, even with the B18C5, you still need extra stuff for the swap. All those little things add up fast.

Wow, I’m feeling better about finding a full JDM B18CR swap for $7k CAD.

You’re getting overcharged, man. You can find them for $3k or grab a B18B for $300 and build it for less than $1k. Or K-swap and boost it for cheaper.
@Lance
B-series is expensive now. Motors are like $4k each.

B20B is still cheap. You can grab one for $250.

True, B20Bs came in many economy cars, but finding a B16 or B18 with VTEC is tough now. I’m building a DOHC D16 ZC because I can mess up on a D-series block and not lose too much money. I wish I was doing this back in the early 2000s when everything was cheap.
