Anyone had experience with a 1991 Prelude Si… what should I look for?

Try offering $3,000 if you’ve got cash ready. They usually go for that.

That’s not a bad price. The battery drain from the wiring issue has me curious though. Definitely take it for a spin before deciding.

The AC on these cars can be tricky because of the climate control unit. I’d recommend checking the wiring for the AC compressor and related parts. I had a similar issue with my ‘89—bad solder joints in the CCU were the problem. Common issues include low R-12, blown fuses, bad compressors, or faulty wiring. These cars are complex but super rewarding for car enthusiasts.

@Skyler
Yeah, they’re definitely a bit overcomplicated in some areas. I think the 3rd gen Preludes were kind of a testbed for new tech Honda was trying out back then.

You can still get AC kits that include the compressor, dryer, and valve from Rock Auto. It might take a while for them to restock, but I got an email when they had it and ordered. Now I’ve got a functioning AC system, though I had to bypass the AC module, which is a pretty common workaround.

@Cale
That’s good to know. I might get my guy to pull a vacuum on it and add some R-12. Let’s see how long that holds up.

What’s the mileage and asking price?

It’s got 130k miles, and they’re asking $3,500.

That’s a great deal.

Even with the issues mentioned?

@Reagan
Yeah, nothing seems too serious. As long as it runs and drives, the rest can be fixed.

@Reagan
Definitely worth it for that price.

@Reagan
If you’re on the PreludePower forum, there are guides for upgrading to a newer style AC compressor. Makes future fixes easier.

I’m in South LA too. Haven’t had AC in my ‘91 Accord for years. It’s not that bad honestly.

I get that. I had a ‘91 CRX without AC, and it was tough during summer. That was my main car back then. This one would be more for fun.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’m checking it out tomorrow (12/3). If I decide to buy, I’ll post an update.

Saw it today. Mechanically, it’s solid—revs and shifts fine. It needs some work though. Driver’s window doesn’t go all the way down, and the sunroof doesn’t fully retract. Windshield needs replacing, and the AC is still a mystery. Heat, wipers, and pop-up lights are working. Not sure if I’ll go for it. Need to think about it.
