What does the P3400 code mean for a Honda Pilot and what causes it?

My 2013 Honda Pilot EX-L has the engine light and VTM light coming on occasionally. When the VTM light is on, the wheels feel tighter. I used my OBD reader and got a P3400 error code. From my research, this could be caused by several issues:

  • Faulty cylinder deactivation solenoid
  • Problem with the cylinder deactivation solenoid harness
  • Bad connection in the solenoid circuit
  • Faulty mass airflow sensor
  • Faulty throttle position sensor
  • Faulty intake manifold pressure sensor
  • Defective lifters
  • Blocked oil passages
  • Low engine oil level
  • Poor oil pressure on the lifters

Should I take my vehicle to a Honda dealership or a local garage for assessment and repair?

First, check your engine oil level. If it’s low, it could trigger the P3400 code for a rocker arm oil pressure switch malfunction (bank 1, firewall side). If the oil level is okay, the issue is probably a faulty pressure switch.

Thanks for your help. I have no experience with mechanics, so here’s a simple question: If I replace one or both pressure switches and they are the cause of the P3400 error, will fixing them clear the error code and show that I did the right thing?

No, you’ll need to clear the code yourself. Places like AutoZone can clear it for you if you show them that you’ve replaced the faulty part.

The P3400 error code usually means there’s a problem with the cylinder deactivation system on Bank 1. Here are some common causes and steps to fix it:

  1. Check the Oil Level: Low oil levels can cause this code. Make sure your engine oil is at the right level and is clean.
  2. Oil Pressure Sensor: A faulty oil pressure sensor can be the issue. Replacing it might fix the problem.
  3. Wiring and Connections: Look at the wiring and connectors for the cylinder deactivation system. Check for any damage or loose connections.

This appears to be a common problem for all Honda Pilot cars. Mine came up and disappeared after some few days.
