Hi everyone, I need some advice about a car I found.
Here are the details:
- Mileage: 230,000 KM
- Repairs done: wheel bearing, suspension parts, brakes
- Transmission: 5-speed manual
- Asking price: $2000 CAD
Hi everyone, I need some advice about a car I found.
Here are the details:
The 2002 CR-V has a 2.4L K-Series engine, which is usually reliable. Common oil leaks can come from the VTEC solenoid gasket (behind the engine, above the oil filter), the valve cover gasket, the VTC strainer gasket (behind the power steering pump), and the VTC solenoid O-ring (on the side of the head).
These gaskets are cheap and easy to replace. At 230,000 KM, I recommend checking the valve lash, which should be done every 30,000 to 50,000 KM after the first inspection at 100,000 KM.
You should also check the front compliance bushings unless the lower control arms have been replaced. Honda manual transmissions are strong and usually last unless driven badly.
Since it has a K-Series engine, it has a timing chain instead of a timing belt, which lasts longer. However, at this mileage, you might want to think about replacing the timing chain, guides, and tensioners if you want the CR-V to last another 230,000 KM.
Very detailed, thank you.
I own a 2008 Civic Si, so I am familiar with the flaws you pointed out.
What do you think of the price, though? Is it too high? Or just right? Manual CRVs are getting harder and harder to find.
I don’t know the prices in your area, but a $2,000 manual CR-V would sell quickly in California at that price. Here, people often ask $4,000 for a beaten-up Civic because Honda prices are very high.
If you want to see how prices compare, check Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for the same car in Los Angeles. You’ll see how crazy the prices are here.
So it’s about $1,600 and has 142,000 miles.
It could be a great deal for you, depending on how rusty it is.
There’s some surface rust on the body, but I’m not sure about the frame. I’ll definitely check that.
I’d be more concerned about rust than the number of miles.
