How strong is the JDM H22A Type S? Can it handle more power?

Anyone know how much power a stock JDM H22A Type S can take before it blows up? Thinking about adding a turbo later on, not looking for crazy power, just a little extra. Do I need to upgrade the internals?

What spoiler is that? Looks really good .

I’ve got an Integra Type R spoiler on my 5th gen. Looks like his is from an Integra RSX.

It’s from a DC5 Teg Type R, my guy.

If you want reliability, leave it stock or get an F20B. The block needs sleeves if you want to boost it.

Is that an Integra spoiler?

What’s that car in the background?

Haha, that’s a mid-80s Honda City. Feels like driving a tin can, but it’s a legend!

Wow, reminds me of the kei cars when I lived in Japan.

Boost isn’t the only factor here. 7 psi on one turbo isn’t the same as 7 psi on another. The closed-deck H22s handle more, but the weak spot is the pistons. They overheat and fail, then the rods go (rated for about 450hp). If you build the bottom end, it’ll hold more than an H22A4, but stock-for-stock, both will pop if you push them too hard.

@Zen
Thanks for the info! I’m not aiming for 450hp, just a small power boost. Can the stock pistons handle anything extra before they fail?

Yeah, the H22A/A4 can still make decent power. You can get 250-300whp, but 300 is pushing it. If your engine has over 100k miles and hasn’t been rebuilt, I wouldn’t go past 250whp. Even 300whp without an LSD is a handful. These cars weigh under 3000 lbs and can be made even lighter, so 250whp is already a solid setup for daily driving.

@Zen
250whp sounds great to me. My engine has about 170,000 km (105,600 miles), but it’s in great shape. The Type S is rated at 220hp at the crank, so a little extra would be perfect.

The Type S actually has better pistons and slightly better-flowing heads, so you’re already a step ahead.

@Zen
Yeah, the Type S is definitely a good platform to start with .
