Got my first car for $200 … is this a good deal or what

This is such a great find. There are so many ways you can make this car fun, fast, and good-looking. Do some research and plan out a project for it. You’re young and got this for way less than what people spend on groceries these days. You can put a little money into it and turn it into a dream project car before you even finish school.

@Ashton
Found out it was flooded, but we have two B-series engines from some old Del Sols, so we’re planning to swap it after spring break.

Make sure to check the interior for mold if you haven’t already. Strip everything and inspect it thoroughly.

@Lior
Also, swap the cabin air filter and use some scents to keep bugs and rodents away. I use pure lavender oil, but peppermint oil works too. Run the heat with the scented filter to get rid of anything living in there and keep pests away.

Oh man, I hope the electronics are okay.

Check for rust, especially on the floorboards. EGs are known to rust there.

Nah, do it today. Someone’s waiting for a ride tonight.

Congrats, but I’m a little jealous.

Clean it up, drive it safely, and keep it forever. Congrats on your first car. This is a classic Honda from a great era.

Find a detailer or clean it yourself. These cars can look amazing with some work. There are plenty of parts in junkyards or online if you need to replace anything. This is the golden age of Honda. I’d recommend a battery disconnect, steering wheel lock, and an alarm system. These cars are easy to steal, so take security seriously. Even a kill switch would help. Any Honda key can open the door and start the ignition in seconds. It happened to me, but my alarm scared the thief off.

@Linden
I’ll definitely do that. This car is going to be my baby for life. I’m never selling it.

My Civic has been with me for five years and it’s still going strong. It’s my first and only car. Take care of it, and it’ll take care of you. Don’t let thieves take your pride and joy. Good luck.

Nice find. I see they upgraded the intake manifold. That air filter is probably filthy with all the dirt in the engine bay. Someone had fun with this car before selling it. Be careful when washing it. Don’t let water sit, or it’ll rust. Dry it off, use a leaf blower, and take it for a drive after washing. Don’t wash it when the engine is hot, and cover the distributor, battery, and alternator. I restored a CX with my nephew for his first car. He kept it for years until it got stolen. I’d install a hidden kill switch.

@Kipp
Water isn’t my biggest concern right now. We found out yesterday it was flooded when we drained the oil pan and it was just water.

That explains a lot. I’d still try to get it running just to see if I could. Then I’d drive it like I stole it. But that’s how I drive my Hondas anyway, after warming them up and checking the fluids.

This is an amazing find. Still the best-looking hatchback in my opinion. The design is simple but perfect.

The EG shares the floorpan with the DC2 Integra but has shorter overhangs and is lighter. Make sure the suspension is in good shape, add some quality tires, and you’ll have a car that can handle better than many newer, more expensive cars.

Awesome! My first car was a 94 Civic SI. Ten years later, I still have it. One piece of advice: don’t use polyurethane engine or transmission mounts. They’ll make the car vibrate like crazy. Stick with stock rubber mounts, even if you’re making more power than stock. Polyurethane mounts are only good for track cars or cars you drive once in a while.

I’ve always loved the 5th-gen Civics with no grill. They look so sporty.
