I recently drove a small VW and it was a great experience. Fun to drive, good power, and super smooth. But the Fit is hard to beat when it comes to cargo space, fuel efficiency, and maintenance. Since they don’t make them anymore, have you moved on to something else or planning to keep yours for years?
I’m looking for my next car, and a used VW Golf seemed like it could be close in some ways because of how nice it drives.
I’ve got a 2010 Red Fit (with a racing stripe). I drive it because it was a gift. Married dad with two kids in college—I got them newer cars so they wouldn’t have to deal with old beaters, but here I am driving a 15-year-old Fit with 167k miles and it just won’t quit. I’m not even trying to keep it alive, it just keeps going. The cargo space is wild, and the cabin feels huge. I used to drive Uber with it, and so many people would get in and say, ‘Why does this car feel bigger inside than outside?’ Felt like I was driving a time machine.
@Branley
Just got my first Fit (not a gift, but I got it cheap from a family friend). It really does feel bigger inside. I’m about to start Uber with it, so it’s good to hear they last forever. Mine’s a 2015 with 43k miles.
@Branley
We’ve got an ‘08 with 82k miles. At this point, the only thing that’ll take it down is if we lose another driver-side mirror. The last one had to be repainted because they don’t have light blue ones in stock anymore.
08 Fit, manual. 160k miles. I get 43mpg on long trips, 34mpg in the city. It’s covered in hail damage and the paint is wrecked, but I don’t care. I just wish they had made a hybrid Fit in the US. It’s the perfect car. If mine ever dies, I’m thinking about a Prius, but the headroom sucks. The hybrid Civic looks weird. The Subaru Crosstrek hybrid felt kind of similar to drive, but the gas mileage was disappointing. If I had to switch, I’d prefer another Honda. The Civic Hatchback looks alright, but it’s not really the same, is it?
@Frederick
The Civic is a bit more comfortable than the Fit. If you go for the 2.0 non-turbo, you avoid the possible issues with the 1.5T. The 2.0 didn’t even have direct injection until recently, so it’s probably more reliable long-term.
If you go used, watch out for AC issues in the 2016-18 models. I went with a Mazda3 to avoid a CVT, since manual Fits and Civics are hard to find where I live. It’s fine, but I doubt it’ll last 360k miles like my old ‘07 Fit (Sport, manual) did.
The previous-gen Civic Hatch had crazy cargo space. I saw a video where they fit more plastic totes in it than some much bigger cars. It’s still a Honda, and still fun to drive.

Yeah, but it has the 1.5T. Nobody really knows how well those will hold up long-term. Also, it’s technically a bigger car.

What car is actually closer to the Fit though? I’m fine with the 1.5T. The bigger issue to me is the weight.
Yaris is probably the closest in terms of reliability.
Other cars in the same category (Chevy Spark, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa Note) feel kind of cheap in comparison. The Fiesta and Mazda2 used to be decent options, but they’re gone now.
If you want something bigger but still fun, a used Golf 2.5 can be a good deal.
