Anyone else got an unstoppable winter car?

I had a crazy experience with my little Fit in the snow…

I work on the road and was coming back from Canada to the US. When I hit Idaho, it started snowing hard. Everyone else was pulling over to put on chains, but I didn’t have any, so I just kept going. The snow kept getting worse as I climbed the mountain pass, so I slowed way down. When I finally made it to the other side, I found out the police had just shut down the road due to whiteout conditions.

I asked what was going on, and the officer told me the pass was completely closed. I said, ‘Oh… I just drove through there.’ He was not happy. He told me to get to a hotel and stay put. I did as I was told, and he even called later to check if I made it. Safe to say, I learned my lesson :joy:

@Lian
That area gets some insane storms. Glad you got through okay!

That car looks like it’s ready for anything! Love it.

Being so low to the ground with a stiff suspension and manual transmission makes it easy to feel what the car is doing. I just wish the steering didn’t feel so ‘video game’-like.

That’s exactly why I love this car! You can tell the second it starts to lose grip. Super easy to drive in tough conditions.

That’s exactly what my Fit looked like before my wife hit a deer with it…

Sounds like the deer took out your Fit and your wife was just along for the ride.

This thing looks solid in winter conditions.

Exactly! People underestimate how capable these little cars are.

I drive through Canadian winters every year, and I always think about switching to an AWD SUV. But I just can’t bring myself to part with my Fit.

What winter tires are you using?

I run Blizzaks. They’re fantastic in deep snow.

I used to have a 7th-gen Civic and ran Continental VikingContact 7s on 195/60R15s. They were amazing for my long winter commutes.

Now I drive a Mazda hatch with 205/60R16 Blizzak WS90s. They’re okay, but noisier and not as grippy as the Continentals. I got them used, though, so that might be a factor. The Continentals lasted longer and were quieter.

If you’re looking for winter tires, I’d suggest going with the narrowest and tallest ones that fit your Fit. It helps a lot in slushy conditions.

@Tom
Good to know! I’ve been using Michelin X-Ice Snow but need a new set soon. I never really understood why narrower tires are better in winter, but everyone swears by it.

Also… you had a 3-hour daily commute? That’s brutal!

@Sky
Winter tires stay soft in the cold, so they grip better. Regular tires get hard and lose traction.

@Tom
Just got my first Fit! It’s an ’08 Sport with 130k miles. Needs some work—shocks, struts, a fog light (thanks to some debris from a truck tire), and a new battery.

Swapped out the tires for Dexteros (Walmart special) in 195/60R15. The slightly taller size makes a difference. I always ran taller/narrower tires on my old 4x4 trucks, so I figured I’d try it here.

I’m also looking for ways to raise my driver’s seat. I’m not tall, but I like sitting a little higher.

Might even throw a sleeping bag in the back and take it on a road trip. Thinking of heading North… or West… Haven’t decided yet.
